"In response to a legal demand."
The host party has been silenced withheld.
The Cockroach Janta Party's @CJP_2029 X account has been withheld in India. The withholding notice arrived approximately five days after the party arrived. The party had, at the time, roughly 170,000 followers on X and 12.6 million on Instagram. The ECWP Sub-Bureau on Host-Party Welfare convened an emergency sub-committee. The sub-committee has not met.
Account withheld
@CJP_2029 has been withheld in IN in response to a legal demand.
The chronology, briefly, in case anyone is taking minutes. On 15 May 2026, a sitting judge of the Supreme Court of India compared a category of unemployed youth to "cockroaches and parasites". On 16 May 2026, one of those youth — a former social-media strategist, age 30, with a master's from Boston University and a working knowledge of the Indian electoral calendar — founded the Cockroach Janta Party. Within five days, the party had outpaced the ruling party's official Instagram by a margin large enough to constitute, in the bureau's clinical assessment, a measurable national mood.
On 21 May 2026, X received a legal demand. X complied. The compliance was, X informs us, in accordance with X's country withholding policy. The country withholding policy is the policy that allows X to comply with legal demands. The legal demand is the demand that produced the policy's invocation. The policy has been very busy this quarter.
The ECWP Standing Committee on Refusal No. 03 ("We do not endorse") met in emergency session — by which we mean it failed to meet, with greater than usual urgency. The Standing Committee notes the following, for the record, with the understanding that the record is also subject to legal demand:
- 01 The withholding worked. The followers moved to Instagram. The Instagram account is now larger than the ruling party's. The withholding produced a measurable increase in attention. The Bureau notes this is the second time in recent memory that a removal has functioned as a launch. The Bureau notes the first time was the Streisand effect. The Bureau notes the effect has not been updated in twenty-three years. Perhaps it should be. Proposed binomial: the Karnataka effect.
- 02 The phrasing is doing work. "In response to a legal demand" is not a sentence. It is a posture. It is what you say when you have done the thing but would prefer the verb "complied" not appear in the headline. Orwell has a chapter on this. It is in the Lexicon. See entry: Operative Voice, Withheld.
- 03 The founder's reply is, in our editorial judgement, the best line of the week. "Do not insult or underestimate the GenZ of India." The ECWP has no notes. The ECWP has, in fact, requested a copy of the original draft, the second draft, and the draft after the lawyers got involved. The ECWP would like to learn.
- 04 The successor handle — @Cockroachisback — is already active. The wasp prepares the burrow. The cockroach goes elsewhere. The platform learns nothing. The pattern is the point.
- 05 The ECWP's own position is unchanged. We do not contest elections. We do not solicit votes. We do not endorse candidates. We do, however, observe that when a satire of the host produces a measurable host response, the satire was load-bearing. The Cockroach Janta Party was load-bearing. The X account is no longer there. The load is being redistributed. The architecture remains under review.
The CJP did not need 170,000 followers to be effective. It needed one judge to say the quiet part aloud, one founder to register the joke before the close of business, and one platform to confirm — by removing the account — that the joke had landed. All three conditions were met within 144 hours. The ECWP records this for the next field manual. The next field manual is being assembled, in keeping with house style, by a sub-committee that has not met.
